New Balance Minimus Trail Review

Nov 17, 2010 | 13 Comments

New Balance’s new Minimus line has created quite a stir within the barefoot/minimalist shoe running community.  Pictures have leaks.  Sketchy details have surfaced.  Rumors have been rampant. The buzz has reached a fevor pitch.

Finally, some answers… A Minimus Trail review!

I managed to persuade the powers that be to write the first comprehensive review of the elusive Minimus Trails.  Keep in mind, this review is written by a barefoot trail runner for other […]

Terra Plana VivoBarefoot EVO II Review

Oct 29, 2010 | 7 Comments

I was sitting in the chair at the dentist’s office.  I had cotton in my mouth and the Spongebob theme was playing on the TV overhead.  The dentist, who is unaware of my running adventures, walking in the room and immediately notices my shoes.

“Whoa!  Those are some awesome shoes… where did you get them?”

Thus started a 15 minute conversation about barefoot running.  I think I convinced him to try it.

I haven’t found […]

ZEM Review

Oct 20, 2010 | 5 Comments

I heard of ZemGear some time ago. Quite honestly, I never considered them as an option for barefoot and minimalist shoe runners. Based on the descriptions, I assumed they were a name-brand aqua sock. I used aqua socks early in my barefoot/minimalist shoe running days, but had abandoned them in favor of better-fitting options.

A few weeks ago, I was killing time on the Barefoot Runners Society forums. I happened to notice the […]

Shoe Classification: Natural Trainer

Weight: 6.7 oz.

Cost: ~$110.00

Review Date: September 20th, 2010

I love these shoes.

End of review.

Not really, but the X-Talon 190s are among the best minimalist shoes I have ever used.  I have been searching for a trail shoe for years.  Prior to Inov-8’s entry into the true minimalist shoe market, the options for trail runners was limited.  My prior favorites were Vibram’s KSOs, though the traction was horrible in any condition except flat, dry […]

Kigo Edge Review

Shoe Classification: Traditional Minimalist Shoe
Weight: 7.1 ounces (size 12.5)
Cost: $69.99
Review Date: October 2nd, 2010

Kigo is a small company that produces minimalist beach and recreational shoes.  I reviewed the “Shel” last year.  Kigo contacted me this year asking if I would be interested in reviewing their new model, the Edge.  I was generally pleased with the Shel, so I jumped at the opportunity.

The Edge shares many qualities with the Shel in […]

GoLite Amp Lite Review

Sep 15, 2010 | 4 Comments

Shoe Classification: Natural Trainer

Weight: 11.8 ounces (size 11.5 us)

Price: $114 at

GoLite is a company best-known for manufacturing hiking and other outdoor gear.  I was immediately intrigued when I learned they were producing a series of shoes that utilized a zero-drop heel-to-toe differential (the difference in height between the thickness of the sole at the heel versus the front or forefoot area).  A zero-drop sole is a fundamental basic requirement of a shoe that allows runners to run […]

Upcoming Shoe Reviews!

Sep 13, 2010 | 4 Comments

Since school has started, the time I have available for writing has decreased dramatically.  Despite my now-busy schedule, I will soon be posting full reviews for three shoes:

The GoLite Amp Lite:  A traditional trainer with a zero-drop heel that will appeal to runners trying natural running without the desire to go barefoot or minimal;

The Kigo Edge: A beach shoe that may be utilized for running or casual wear;

The Inov-8 X-Talon 190: A trail shoe with a gnarly tread […]
