Ultramarathon Training: What I Did for Western States

Jun 28, 2011 | 51 Comments

I’m getting quite a few questions about my training for Western States… mostly from the people that were aware of my lackadaisical approach I took.   The race performance did not seem even remotely possible given my apparent training regimen.  Some (Shacky) even accused me of sandbagging.

For my three previous 100 milers, I took various approaches.

For the first Burning River attempt in ’08, I followed Crossfit and Crossfit Endurance religiously.  I meticulously planned every Read More...

Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run: Some Thoughts

Jun 27, 2011 | 8 Comments

I won’t have a chance to write a formal race report for a few days, but I did want to share some thoughts.  I managed to finish in 23:39, which beat my previous 100 mile PR by about four hours.  I have a ton of people to thank:

Shelly: My crew chief and the closer for pacing duties.  Shelly is the reason I was able to do this in the first place.
Jeremiah Cataldo: Paced me for about thirty Read More...

Somnio Nada Review

Jun 8, 2011 | 5 Comments

By Jesse Scott, BRU Staff Writer

I was approached to review the Somnio Nada. I had only known of Somnio for their array of customizable running shoes I saw advertised in triathlon media. I always thought the idea was interesting, but it kind of goes against my views on complicated footwear. Nevertheless, the company seemed to be truly searching to make a high quality product to help their customers.

Barefoot Racing in January and Frozen Junk

Jan 1, 2011 | 4 Comments

Shelly and I ran the Sgt. Preston of the Yukon 6 mile road race in Muskegon, MI today.  It was a balmy 30° at race time, which is considerably warmer than last year’s race.  Since we recently endured a warm spell that melted all our snow, I contemplated running the race barefoot and in the Sport Kilt.  In all likelihood, I wouldn’t get another chance to do either until spring.

When we arrived at the Read More...

HUFF 50k Race Report

Dec 22, 2010 | 6 Comments

This isn’t my typical race report… this one is succinct. :-)  Instead of spending a lot of time writing, I’ve been experimenting with video editing.  I may post a longer report in the near future.  In the interim, here’s a brief description of the HUFF 50k and the accompanying video.

Shelly and I were looking forward to this road trip to Indiana to run the HUFF 50k.  Mark Robillard, our friend and my unofficial brother, had been out of Read More...
