Quick 2013 Recap, 2014 Preview… Including New Trail and Ultra Book

Dec 22, 2013 | One Comment

This past year was a significant deviation from our previous few years. Here’s a quick and dirty review:

We semi-settled down in the San Diego area,
We ran a total of one race this year, the San Diego Trail Marathon, which I DNFed at the 26 mile, 384 yard mark.
We had a bout of abject poverty, which was both humbling and eye-opening. Thankfully it didn’t last long.
I worked for UPS as a seasonal worker (actually last holiday season), Read More...

Choosing Safe and Easy or Exciting and Difficult?

Aug 27, 2013 | 5 Comments

My life came to a small crossroad over the last two weeks. Our three children went back to school after a too-long summer break (I pretended to be a stay-at-home-dad for a few months.) That brought me to a choice- do I take a full-time job at the company I’ve been working for since January, or do I focus on writing, starting a running class, and doing freelance social media consulting?

It’s a classic “traditional” versus Read More...

Weight Loss Experimentation: Calories in/ Calories Out in the Real World

Jul 1, 2013 | 6 Comments

I love trying new physical adventures. Over the years, I’ve played a wide variety of sports, both team and individual. Each one presented different physical and mental skills which helped me grow as a person. Each one was a unique puzzle that challenged me in a new way. I’ve been looking for a new challenge since the allure of running ultras waned. Shelly and I have been training at an mma gym, which includes Brazilian jiu jitsu. There’s Read More...

Trail Running and Ultramarathon Book is Finished!

Mar 28, 2013 | One Comment

I finished up the expanded and edited version of “Never Wipe Your Ass with a Squirrel: A trail running, ultramarathon, and wilderness survival guide for weird folks.“I’ve accomplished my goal of producing the least-serious-but-still-exceedingly-useful trail and ultra book in existence!

I added significantly more content than the original version, and my editing team did a wonderful job of eliminating the grammar and other errors. New table of contents can be found at the bottom of this post.

New Year’s Resolution: Change the World

Dec 26, 2012 | 5 Comments

The end of the year always brings about the opportunity to reflect on the past year and plan for the next. As you can probably tell by the tone of my last few posts here and over at The Sexpressionists, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately. Our traveling journey over the previous year and a half resulted in a ton of amazing experiences and some great personal growth. We’re enjoying our “down” time right now, but Read More...

First BRUcrew Workout This Thursday!

Nov 27, 2012 | One Comment

After several delays, I’m finally ready to begin the BRUcrew workout group! The process of getting settled in San Diego took longer than expected, and the Chile trip took some preparation. All that has passed, and I’m ready to begin!

The first group will meet this Thursday (November 29th) at 5:30am at Los Penasquitos Park in San Diego. This workout will be completely free; I’m working out the logistics of the workout group. I was originally only Read More...

I spent the last few days with the Merrell Chile team, and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’ll be writing a full recap in the days to come, including a recap of the Bareform clinic I held, our run in the Andes, and our Crossfit clinic. Here’s a recap video:
