Your Perspective is Wrong: The Reason to Experience New Things
My last post on our temporary poverty situation led to reflection on a variety of things related to my experiences over the last few years. I’ve noticed a pretty distinct pattern, which is probably related to my serial hobbyist nature:
It’s nearly impossible to have a remotely accurate perception on any experience until you’ve been immersed in it for some time.
This idea manifests itself like this-
I try something new.
I glorify the experience, then write Read More...
BRUcrew Update: A Journey to Become More Social, Courageous, and Empathic. Or Awesome.
Last week I wrote a post the BRUcrew idea, then a follow-up post explaining how to overcome the fears associated with the challenges. So far, we’ve had six challenges, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. The Facebook group (where the challenges are posted) has about 80 members, most of which have done at least a few of the challenges.
The challenges themselves have ranged from the physically difficult (50 burpees), to the embarrassing Read More...
New Year’s Resolution: Change the World
The end of the year always brings about the opportunity to reflect on the past year and plan for the next. As you can probably tell by the tone of my last few posts here and over at The Sexpressionists, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately. Our traveling journey over the previous year and a half resulted in a ton of amazing experiences and some great personal growth. We’re enjoying our “down” time right now, but Read More...
Industrial Athletes and Minimalist Shoes: Can it Reduce Workplace Injuries?
Since Cyber Monday, I’ve been working for UPS helping to deliver packages. There are several reasons I took the seasonal job, some of which are related to running. I was in a bit of a funk and needed to take a break, but needed an activity to maintain my fitness level. Spending many hours five days a week running heavy boxes up and down apartment building stairs has certainly did the trick. I actually lost weight, got stronger, Read More...
First BRUcrew Workout This Thursday!
After several delays, I’m finally ready to begin the BRUcrew workout group! The process of getting settled in San Diego took longer than expected, and the Chile trip took some preparation. All that has passed, and I’m ready to begin!
The first group will meet this Thursday (November 29th) at 5:30am at Los Penasquitos Park in San Diego. This workout will be completely free; I’m working out the logistics of the workout group. I was originally only Read More...
The BRUcrew Tribe: Fitness for Those That March to ther Beat of a Different Drum
Over the last few years, I’ve had a dream of starting a fitness group that was loosely based on the idea of an ultramarathon training group, but incorporated other elements like weight training, speed work, hill repeats, running form coaching, and ultra-specific situational training. I wanted the group to be based on outdoor fitness (because being inside sucks). I wanted the location, dates, and times to be flexible. I wanted the group to be populated by hard working Read More...
Sleep Deprivation Ultramarathon Training
Doc Ott recently wrote a blog post about his strategy for ultra training. He essentially came up with a method that allows him to hit high mileage and still spend time with his family.
His methodology brought back not-so-fond memories of my early days as an ultrarunner. I was more or less in the same boat- I had a finite amount of time to train but needed to build an endurance base to handle the rigors Read More...
Thermoregulation and Running: A Cool Idea
The Evil Moisture Wicking Clothing?
In a previous post, I theorized about the role a moisture-wicking shirt played in three crappy runs over the last seven months or so. After reading your comments and doing a little research, my “ah-ha’ moment wasn’t quite so revolutionary. The conclusion is pretty obvious:
Moisture wicking clothing does more harm than good for runners in hot weather.
The reasoning is simple- the mechanism of drawing moisture away from the skin thwarts Read More...
