By now, many of you have probably picked up on my references to my news regarding The Barefoot Running Book. The book has been picked up by Plume Publishers, an imprint of the Penguin Group.
A few months ago, I was in the process of researching methods to have the book translated and exported to various non-English countries. Up to this point, I had done all publishing and distribution myself. It wasn’t too difficult, but did pose significant logistical challenges since hitting the road. The prospect of significantly adding to that workload wasn’t appealing. Based on the recommendation of my second edition editor Dirk Wierenga, I secured an agent to shop the international publishing rights. Around the same time, I was approached by Plume. The timing couldn’t have been better!
I didn’t plan on selling the domestic rights, but I was impressed with Plume’s available resources and vision for the project. I had considered reformatting and updating the book since our knowledge base has changed since the last edition, and selling the rights would give me that opportunity. I have been approached three times before about selling the rights, but the publishers had no interest in the actual topic of barefoot running. I sensed this was just an attempt to secure a book to fill a niche. Plume was different. They could greatly improve domestic distribution AND take care of international distribution.
The decision was also difficult from a financial standpoint. The book has been a significant portion of my family’s income since Shelly and I left our teaching jobs. Unless the book sells A LOT of copies, we’ll likely lose a big chunk of our income. The possibility of casting a MUCH wider net made the decision much easier. We’re adept at adjusting our lifestyle to a lower income, and this opportunity made it worthwhile. This whole journey has never been about making money. It’s about inspiring people to make positive changes in their lives.
What Does This Mean?
The second edition of The Barefoot Running Book will still be available until approximately June, primarily through Amazon. At the time of this writing, it’s available for the dirt-cheap price of only about $6.00.
The Plume edition should be available sometime in August. I would anticipate the book being available pretty much everywhere books are sold.
For those that love collecting things, the second edition will no longer be printed, thus limiting the availability to those still in stock in stores, at Amazon, or in my personal stockpile. It won’t be nearly as rare as the first edition, but there will still be a limited number available. Luckily, a lot of people that bought the second edition probably used them to start fires now that winter has arrived, thus limiting the supply.
The new Plume edition will feature a new cover, reorganized format, much information has been updated, a few things have been added, and some stuff has been removed. I added a lot of pictures to the workout section as there was confusion over the exercises along with updating the resources section. I’ve been able to tap my personal experiences, forum participation, meeting of a ton of other barefoot runners, and quasi-insider shoe industry connections to provide the very best practices to learn good form.
My goal has always been to make this the easiest to follow comprehensive barefoot and minimalist shoe running resource available- no rambling or pseudoscience, just good experience-based lessons from an average dude that likes to experiment, push his boundaries, and loves teaching others.
I’m excited about the new edition. It will give me one more tool to help make a positive dent in the Universe.
Thank you to everyone that purchased any of the editions!
