Terra Plana VivoBarefoot Kali Review

Terra Plana VivoBarefoot struck gold.  Again.  If you’ve followed my blog for awhile, you’ve  undoubtedly noticed I have an affinity for this UK-based company.  Why do I have such an affinity for Terra Plana?

Simply put, they make the world’s best minimalist casual/ business casual shoes.

I wear a pair of Dharmas or Aquas to work every day.  The only other shoe I wear are my Lunas, but they’re a bit out of season right now due to sub-freezing temperatures.

Shelly, my amazing wife, has been testing a pair of black Terra Plana’s Kalis for about four months. (read her blog here)  The shoes are a lightweight Mary Jane-style shoe appropriate for work environments.  To say she loves them would be a huge understatement.  Over that four month period, I don’t think she has worn any other shoe.  I may be off-base and slightly sexist with this comment, but I don’t know any woman that wears the same shoes every single day.  She actually plans her wardrobe around the black shoes.

Since winter has arrived, she wears a pair of boots to work, then changes into the shoes when she arrives.  This weekend, we had a minor crisis.  We started our Christmas break, which means two weeks away from school.  In the rush to leave school to get on the road to Indiana (for the HUFF 50k- race report coming soon), she forgot to put the shoes in her purse when changing into her boots.  We’re going to have to go back to school and have someone open the building to retrieve them.  Two weeks is too long to go without her Kalis.  I’ll post more pictures as soon as we get the shoes.

So what makes these shoes so special?  From a technical standpoint, they have all the qualities of a great minimalist shoe.  They have a zero-dropped heel (no heel lift).  They have a wide toe box.  They have no cushioning or arch support.  They have a thin, flexible sole (3mm).  Just like the rest of Terra Plana’s VivoBarefoot line, they are a minimalist shoe consumer’s dream.

According to Shelly:

  • She loves the toe splay,
  • She uses them with and without socks,
  • She also loves the fact that they go with anything (from skirts to capris to pants),
  • Only shoe she ever wears; best dressy shoe she’s found since going the barefoot/ minimalist route.

Terra Plana itself is a great company.  The company works hard to produce eco-friendly products.  They have several stores spead throughout the world.  I had the good fortune of visiting their New York store and meeting many members of their team when they hosted John and Maggie Durant’s 1st Annual New York City Barefoot Run (read my report here).  It is easy to understand how they are able to produce such wonderful products; their team is stocked with warm, friendly people that genuinely care about their customers.

Terra Plana had given me a 25% off coupon code to share with my readers through the end of December.  To prove that they’re cool cats, they generously added 5% to the discount and extended it another month.  If you place an order by January 31st, use the coupon code BARE30 and receive 30% each order.  Feel free to share this discount code with friends, family, and social networks like Twitter and Facebook.
